The cannon is not fixed with the rings, so it offers a point of release for horses that are very rigid in contact. It can be bent inwards due to its double joint on each side of the bridge, but it cannot split, making it more stable than a conventional jointed mouthpiece.
The alloy balls help relax the horse by being able to rotate them with the tongue and the high port prevents the horse from passing its tongue over the mouthpiece.
